Wedding Inspiration

I've reluctantly taken a break from graphic design this summer, and it's been very difficult to say the least. I really can't wait to get my life back together (we're moving out of my parent's house and into our apartment in Provo next week) and finally start designing again. I didn't know how much I'd really miss it. I miss sketching and poster designing. I miss typography.

To fill the void, I've been spending lots of time browsing design blogs and whatnot. In the past few days I have happened to come across some wedding blogs that feature beautiful invitations. I think if I could go back and change one thing about our wedding, it would be to have spent much more time on our invitations. I was a newbie designer who didn't know my own capabilities yet. I wish I would have had the time to really express our personalities through our invitations (although I don't think anyone but me would have appreciated them).

Here is my friend Lexi's invitation - she'll be married soon!! 

I absolutely adore everything about it.

I've also been behind on browsing the design.work.life blog, and while catching up I came across head vs. heart. It's a wedding inspiration blog and oh golly her invitations are just as beautiful as Lexi's. She made a "book" with five parts that contained a summed up version of their "story". And don't even get me started on the the gorgeous calligraphy.

The Wedding Tree

Man, I wish I would have found this a year and a half ago so I could have used it for my own wedding. But that's okay...my younger sister Logan will be the last one to get hitched and maybe she'll like the idea and will get to use it.

Vancouver Olympics

Anyone watch the Olympics opening ceremony last night? Tyler and I did...well, in the end it was mostly me. Tyler fell asleep.

The parade of nations was cool. But I felt really bad for the country in-between the US and Canada. They pretty much got shafted; they didn't even show them or announce them on tv. Sad.

The show itself was, eh, alright. It was a little weird. I understand where they were going with part of it, but Aborigines were a little overdone. I thought their dancing in the beginning (before the Parade of Nations) was a bit long...they could have summed that up into five minutes. (It's not that I don't like the Aborigines, it's just not necessarily the most exciting thing for me to watch). I did like the use of projectors. That was AH-MAZE-ING. I was baffled at the technology they have today. Weren't the whales swimming on the floor cool? I think that was my favorite thing of the night.

The opera singer was ridiculous: her voice, her dress, her hair. I put the tv on mute after the first note came out of her mouth. That's all I have to say.

The BEST thing about the Olympics, by far, is the graphics. Oohdelalee, they are gorgeous. I want them in my house.

BYU Hoodies

At work on Friday, we got assigned to design new hoodies for the BYU Bookstore! What fun. :)

TYPOGRAPHY!!!

I have struck gold.

 And I'd like to share my riches with you.

Remember that ampersand necklace I found on etsy and fell in love with? (hint, hint...)

I came across a beautiful website that features a new ampersand (the '&' symbol) everyday. With a link to download the font. Oh hooray. I'm giddy in my seat just thinking about it.

PLUS....this site. The League of Moveable Type. I'd love to join. I'm all about free beautiful fonts. But I don't make any myself, unfortunately. At least none that would qualify to join. :)

So eat up. Good typography is everything.

Beautiful Calligraphy

One of my bosses at work, Marie, showed this to me today. Isn't it lovely?

I think sometime soon I'd like to invest in an old-fashioned ink calligraphy pen.

I'll practice, practice, practice until I'm this amazing. :)

California Tourism Posters

My high school has invited me and other alumni to submit works to auction off at their annual art show. I had no idea what to submit, because so many of my works wouldn't be things you'd necessarily hang on a wall.
For my illustration class, our last project can be a tourism poster, so I'm going to do a set of three. Here's a ROUGH of the first one (really really rough!):
