Owner's Manual

I was browsing Amazon and came across this fantastically designed "owner's manual" for a baby. Reading some of the pages inside really made me chuckle and wonder if Tyler would enjoy something like this.
The Baby Owner's Manual: Operating Instructions, Trouble-Shooting Tips, and Advice on First-Year Maintenance
It's written from the perspective of bringing home baby is equivalent to bringing home that fancy, new surround sound system. Both require maintenance, daily care, etc. I'm loving the vintage illustrations - how fun would it be (as a graphic designer and/or illustrator) to work on a book like this?

MoMA Playhouse

Man, this makes me wish I had this when I was little.
Totally beats Barbie dolls.

The MoMA is coming out with an entire line of modern kids toys! It's a dream come true!!

Font Sensitivity

"It is a well-established fact of scienterior design that children who are exposed to appropriate fonts in infancy are 10 times less likely to develop font hypersensitivity later in life."

HA! I knew I wasn't crazy. Perhaps I have a font hypersensitivity because I was exposed to Comic Sans too much as a child?

Caesar Salad Recipe

 image via BBC GoodFood

Although I don't like fish (won't go near it, actually) I do love a good Caesar salad. When my sister and I were in high school, my parents took us to a celebratory dinner of some sort to The Cheesecake Factory. Logan and I decided to split the Caesar salad, and raved the entire time about how yummy it was! My parents just sat across the table laughing hysterically at us, and we couldn't figure out why. (If any of you know my parents, this is very unlike them. I recall Mom laughing so hard she was almost in tears.) After the bowl was (literally) licked clean by Logan and I, my mom confessed the reason she was laughing so hard is because of the (strong smell of) fish in the salad! She couldn't believe we didn't know anchovies were a crucial part of Caesar salad, and that is why it tasted so good. She told us as soon as the salad came to the table she and Dad could smell the anchovies in it, but because we didn't notice, they didn't say a word. How's that for getting your kids to eat fish?

Needless to say, I still love Caesar salad. I just try to forget there are tiny little ground up fish in there! This past week my favorite meal was a homemade chicken Caesar salad. I made the dressing from scratch, and boy was it yummy!

For my birthday, Tyler got me The Best of America's Test Kitchen cookbooks (2009 and 2010 editions). I love love love them! They not only have excellent recipes, but they teach you why they are excellent. For the Caesar salad recipe, for example, it goes into detail about the balance needed for the dressing. They used mayonnaise instead of the typical raw egg to food safety reasons, cut the lemon juice drastically, and used just a hint of garlic. The blended it in the blender to "ensure a stable dressing that didn't separate". Basically the cookbook is a cookbook AND a good read. Basically my theory of cooking is this: If I'm going to put the effort into trying your recipe, you better have a good explanation of why it is better. This entire cookbook does just that.

Here's the Caesar salad recipe for you. I made a few slight changes: instead of parmesan cheese (which is soooo expensive!) my mom taught me to just buy the giant block of pecorino romano cheese from Costco. The block is humongous and it costs under $10. (Note on that: to keep it fresher longer, break up the block into 3-4 pieces and individually wrap them in plastic wrap. Put these all in a ziploc bag and use one small block at a time.) Also, I couldn't bear the thought of tiny fish in a can. Gross. So I bought anchovy paste, which is actually nicely priced (around $2 for the tube). 2 anchovies are equal to 1/2 tsp. paste. And the paste keeps for a long time in the fridge, whereas the can of tiny, nasty fish has to be used up right away. Convenient and cheap!

Caesar Salad
1/2 tsp. each Salt and Pepper
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup finely grated parmesan cheese + 1 cup grated
2 anchovy fillets, rinsed and patted dry*
1 T. fresh lemon juice
1 T. white wine vinegar
1 T. Worcestershire sauce
1 T. Dijon mustard
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 cup olive oil

Combine olive oil and garlic. Set aside. Blend all other ingredients together until smooth. Slowly add olive oil mixture until incorporated. Toss with romaine and shredded parmesan. (Enough for 3 romaine hearts - about 12 cups.)

*Again, I used the anchovy paste. My super-duper cookbook says that "after a head-to-head tasting of our recipe prepared with equal amounts of anchovy paste and anchovy fillets, we found little difference. Though a few astute tasters felt that the paste had a "saltier" and "slightly more fishy" flavor, in such small quantities it was deemed an acceptable substitute. For dishes that use just a touch of anchovy, the squeeze-and-go convenience of the tube can't be beat." (The Best of America's Test Kitchen 2009, page 29).

Nesting - Jack's Nursery

Jack's nursery has come so far in the past week! I made a bunting for his wall (see above) using scrapbook paper and cardstock, got a $12 rocking chair off craigslist, I painted the balls on his crib, and I organized his bookshelf! Go me! Now we're just waiting for his dresser (my parents will bring it sometime within the next month or two) and curtains for the window. I bought teal sheets to make window curtains out of. This little guy's room is fantastic and so much cooler than I expected it ever to be. I'm happy with the color scheme and the un-matchyness of it all. What do you guys think?

Pesto Pizza

Mmm...

Since we've been back in Utah and I have a lot of time on my hands (for the next month or two, at least until the baby comes.) I've been cooking like crazy. I have come to enjoy it - but only when Tyler comments about how delicious it is. If last night's recipe was a bust, I need a little motivation to get started again.

This past week we tried Paula Deen's Hasbrown Cassrole. WAY too much food for the two of us. The entire 9x13 pan was filled and bubbling over the top with eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, and cheese. I made the mistake of putting maple-flavored sausage in there (it's usually the only kind I will touch - our family didn't grow up with lots of sausage so I'm not a huge fan.) and it was much too sweet. Follow her recipe and use some sort of spicy sausage. Needless to say, the leftovers make fantastic breakfast burritos!

The (second) favorite meal made this week was Pesto Pizza, although it hasn't made promising microwave leftovers just yet. I may have to pop out the toaster oven today to get it crispy again. With (mostly) my parent's help,  Tyler and I have saved up several Christmases and several birthdays to get a bosch. It's wonderful. I love it. I'm so glad I didn't get a Kitchenaid. :) Anyway, I whipped up a quick batch of 100% whole-wheat pizza dough in the bosch, and it was surprisingly very light and airy. I formed a crust (although next time I will make our crust a tinch thinner), spread pesto over the top, and finished off with thinly sliced tomatoes and freshly grated mozzarella cheese. Mmm, it was delicious, thick and bubbly. Highly recommended. I also recommend to anyone to "invest" $4 and get a basil plant, even if it is the end of summer. We have been lucky this summer to see it flourish, and each week we can make a huge batch of pesto with all of its leaves!

For Sale

Alas, I am selling my wedding dress. I don't see the need to keep hauling it around for years to come. I'll never wear it again, and I'd love for someone else to get the same joy and satisfaction out of it as I did. I'd love for another bride-to-be to feel beautiful in it like I did!

If you know of anyone who would be interested, let me know!
Here's the posting on ksl.com.

To add to my last post, my sister emailed me a link to a blog that details ways of making baby food. However, this blog recommends another blog, which I'll share with you.

It really goes into detail about how easy and cheap it is to make homemade baby food! Tyler and I are always up for saving money! Find out more here from Nurture Baby!

Jonesy Adventures

Wow, it's been sooo long! Tyler and I finished up a great summer in San Diego by attending the Del Mar Horse Races. I found it terribly dull and boring, but Tyler enjoyed it. In the least, it was fun to mingle and meet a few of his coworkers. Above is a shot of us on the bus to the races. As you can tell, we did not spend all summer at the beach. We're both pretty pasty!

The next day we met Tyler's family at Disneyland for the day. What a blast! Tyler really enjoyed riding the roller coasters with his brothers. I enjoyed, as usual, hopping the tracks and holding bags. :) Here are a few highlights from the day:

Todd and Suzy (with Todd's beard)

Tyler, of course, found Guitar Hero. I think he miraculously finds this game everywhere we go.

Teacups. Who doesn't love the teacups?

I guess you can't really tell, but Kendall and Ben both have really long legs and are over 6' tall. So with the four of them crammed into the teacup, their knees kept bumping against one another! They were still by far the fastest teacup!

ToonTown with Olivia and Tyler

Waiting in line for Indiana Jones. I'm really sad this picture is all blurry, and that I didn't have enough room to get Todd's face!

At the end of the day. We were all pretty much exhausted.

We ate a pretty good dinner by the lake. Thanks for the treat, Todd!

After the park, in Downtown Disney.

Thanks for a wonderful day, Joneses!

I should also mention that all of Tyler's hard work paid off this summer! We got a job offer with KPMG and are really excited about it. Tyler really enjoyed the company and the people he worked with.

Wedding Inspiration

I've reluctantly taken a break from graphic design this summer, and it's been very difficult to say the least. I really can't wait to get my life back together (we're moving out of my parent's house and into our apartment in Provo next week) and finally start designing again. I didn't know how much I'd really miss it. I miss sketching and poster designing. I miss typography.

To fill the void, I've been spending lots of time browsing design blogs and whatnot. In the past few days I have happened to come across some wedding blogs that feature beautiful invitations. I think if I could go back and change one thing about our wedding, it would be to have spent much more time on our invitations. I was a newbie designer who didn't know my own capabilities yet. I wish I would have had the time to really express our personalities through our invitations (although I don't think anyone but me would have appreciated them).

Here is my friend Lexi's invitation - she'll be married soon!!
I absolutely adore everything about it.

I've also been behind on browsing the design.work.life blog, and while catching up I came across head vs. heart. It's a wedding inspiration blog and oh golly her invitations are just as beautiful as Lexi's. She made a "book" with five parts that contained a summed up version of their "story". And don't even get me started on the the gorgeous calligraphy.

More inspiration I completely fell in love with:
(wish I had the credits for the last four pictures, but I don't.)

St. Marie Font

Here's a new (free!) font I came across today. Isn't it lovely? Download it here.

My hair!!

Holy moley, I dyed my hair. I did it.

I let Doreen (our fantastic hairstylist/good family friend down here in Oceanside) go all the way and do whatever she wanted to my hair.

Tyler has always wanted it dark, and though I love it blonde, the girls at Paul Mitchell school in Provo take 4.5 hours (!!) to highlight my hair each time I go in. It's ridiculous and I finally decided to just take a chance! I'm still not use to it yet - it's definitely a change! It matches my eyebrows now, and it makes my eyes really pop green and/or blue. It should fade a bit, but still stay brown. (I've had trouble in the past getting any color to stay in my hair.)

(and on a completely unrelated note, here is a sweet picture of Tyler I found on the lappy today. I love this man so much!!)

DIY Mobile

Darling bird mobile, eh? If we were having a girl, I'd totally attempt this DIY project.
Find the tutorial and pattern here. (Pattern is on the left.)

I think Jack's room needs a mobile. Something interesting for him to look at, you know? It would get awfully boring staring at the ceiling all the time. :) Instead of the one above, I think I'm going to try my skills at a pinwheel mobile I found on Etsy. Cute, eh?
